"All is Whale" by Ann Tai

​“All is Whale” represents the idea of being alone but not lonely. The whale swims around in space, surrounded by floating spheres. The circles contain different worlds with unique flora and fauna. Though the whale doesn’t stay too long in any of the worlds, it appreciates the beauty found in each one as it passes them and connects to each one of them, however briefly.
 
The whale is modeled after a humpback whale and the yellow dots on its back are stars. Each of the worlds represents something that I like (from left to right): the blue swallows (birds), the yellow fire (fire), the sunset (colors of the sky), the red mountain (mountains), the avocado (vegetables), the grass and flowers (nature), and the goldfish turning into petals (fish).
 
I used watercolor to create “All is Whale”. Watercolor is one of my favorite mediums because I love how the pigment fans out in the water and creates a hazy, dreamy effect. I used more paint to paint some details to make them more vibrant and “pop out” from the more dream-like background.

Ann Tai is currently living in Taiwan, a country with beautiful beaches, mountains, and forests that inspire her to write and draw stories. She spends most of her time writing images that she can't put into drawings and sketching words that she can't put into poems. Sometimes she can be found sewing, reading, or baking cookies that are as hard as bricks.
